Mini habits to build for children for a better life

To achieve anything significant, you need to start doing small things. We all know it, don’t we? So how about using this strategy in our children’s lives to give them a positive start right from the beginning.

If we work on creating impactful, healthy and useful habits for our children, it will stay within them throughout their Life. Good habits will help them build a strong foundation, which will eventually let them experience a better life.

I am sharing a few habits which we should build for our children right from a younger age, which will help them adapt to these practices quickly and will be useful to them. These routines might appear too familiar or easy to you, but each one has its benefit to help children become a better person.

1. Making their bed once they wake up in the morning :
It makes them feel cheerful, accomplished, increases their productivity, creates a positive environment in the room, and the place looks clean in an instant!

2. No eating while watching TV:
It helps them to be mindful while eating, eliminates instances of overeating, enables them to stay connected with the family, and keeps them healthy.

3. Eating salads without salt:
With the sedentary lifestyle, we are living in; currently, the intake of food is more compared to the calories we are burning out. So once the children grow up, they will get conscious of what they are eating. If we give them such habits of avoiding unnecessary salt intake, it will help them stick to a healthy lifestyle more easily.

Unnecessary salt consumption is the cause of many health conditions like high blood pressure, heart diseases etc.

4. Eating plain curd without salt or sugar:
Curd is an excellent source of protein, and we should eat it daily. Taking my example, I never had curd in my childhood, and if I had it in other places during my vacations, I always wanted to add sugar in it.

It was only five years back I starting making it daily at home and consuming it. And it took me some practice to eat it straight without adding the extra calories to it. But finally, now it’s a part of Life. So if you can help your children savour the plain taste of curd than depending on sugar or salt, it would help make it a healthy snack item.

5. Soaking almonds overnight and consuming them:
You can give your child the ownership of soaking almonds every night, a simple task which any child can do. Owning this task will teach your child the importance of health and how we can take care of our well-being. Almonds do wonders for digestion, brain, skin, and cholesterol and weight loss.

6. Restricting TV time to once a week or 45mins to 1 hour in a week:
Endless TV time has done no good for anyone. It blocks your creativity, turns off your brain, and makes you more lethargic.

If we work on allocating a day for TV or split the TV time into two days for our children rather than giving them access to it every day, it will push them to think out of the box. Once they know they can’t sit in front of the TV, they will figure out different creative ways to entertain them than depending on TV to do it for them.

7. Using natural flavours in milk:
I have introduced this topic in my earlier blog “Healthy eating habits for children”. And also mentioned a few varieties of milk we can make with dry fruits (Almonds, Cashews, Raisins, Dates, Pistachios, Saffron, and Cardamom etc.) If we introduce this healthy habit to our children, they will stick to it for their lifetime benefitting their health and nourishing it.

After tasting these delicious flavours, they would never want to go back to calories filled flavours available in the market. And the bonus is they will pass these good habits to their future family too!

8. Being presentable always:
We all know how it feels to be around presentable people. It’s always a delight to be around them, they have a positive vibe, and we all love to be with such personalities. So why not we be one of them!

Teaching children to wear ironed clothes, ensuring they are appropriately groomed and have suitable attire can have long-lasting effects on them. It helps them to maintain personal hygiene, makes them feel positive and boosts their confidence level.

Instances could happen where they get up and don’t shower immediately; still, you should ensure they are taking care of themselves properly and not walking around with that frizzy hair.

It’s also a good habit to make them learn to freshen up in the evening.

Anything followed over a long period becomes a habit, and our practices sketch our character. To build a strong personality, we need to start working from childhood, that’s where the roots lie. It’s the best time to create simple but powerful routines which will help them in their journey called Life.
