Owning a wardrobe which you really love
Clothes are an essential part of our everyday life. We have loads of it stored in boxes, suitcases, hangers, and our cupboards burst out of them. The irony we face is when we want to get ready, and we open the closet, we feel "oh! I don't have anything to wear! Isn't it?"
We all have been in this situation n number of times, and still, we hardly do anything about it. We keep storing our old clothes, whether they fit us or not, gifted ones which we don't like, clothes we run away from wearing them. And we keep buying them in quantities on our trips to the mall. And the cycle goes on.
I feel we can break this cycle and own a wardrobe which we like. Imagine a wardrobe where each cloth you have, you have a liking for it, and you feel happy to wear it. It's not a difficult task, and you can achieve it if you stay true to yourself and make quick decisions.
Here are some steps which will help you when you start reviewing your existing collection of clothes
1. Foremost, go to the clothes you run away from and remove them from your wardrobe. Like the ones that whenever you see them, you start building excuses in your mind that you don't want to wear it now
2. Remove those clothes in which you don't feel comfortable wearing them
3. Remove clothes which don't fit you anymore. I know that desire "I will wear this when I lose some weight". But dear, when you will lose weight, you can wear many trendy clothes which you can buy on your weekend trips to the mall. Just storing piles of clothes for wearing it in your future is not a good idea. When you are seeing them, you will feel stressed that you didn't lose your weight.
And no, I am not discouraging you from losing your weight. When you want to lose your weight, you will put your heart and soul into it and do everything possible. When your mind is thinking about losing weight all the time no matter what, trust me, that's when you will be in the right direction to lose it.
4. Remove clothes which are too loose for you. Ah! Yes, I hear that thought running in your mind, "I will keep it for my night time". And the answer is "No". If you like that clothing, it's comfortable to wear and fits in your nighttime wear collection, keep it.
Otherwise, shifting the clothes from outdoor wear to home wear, or from home wear to night time wear will make no difference in your wardrobe.
5. Discard the clothes which you were gifted, but you don't like them. You are keeping them only because you feel bad to give them away. I believe the idea of a gift is that the person should use it and give you happiness. If a gift is creating any guilt in you as you are unable to like it, makes you feel bad that you are not using it and feel at fault to give it away, then the whole purpose of a gift is getting failed.
Pass on that gift to someone you love and who will feel happy to have it. And this way at least that present would get appropriately used. Hence, that pair is not lying in your wardrobe for years; now the clothing is with someone who loves it. This way, you have respected your gift in real sense.
6. Discard the expensive clothing you have kept only because they are costly, not because you love them, want them, or fit into them.
Keeping all the above points in your mind, when you review your clothes, what's left in your closet will be something you like, feel confident and comfortable to wear them. All the ones that you have discarded can be washed, ironed, and packed individually for donation. The donation will be a wonderful gift for someone who requires them. Imagine the piles of "no use to you" and created regret in you has transformed into a blessing for someone in need!
Once you own such a wardrobe, you can apply a few tips like
i) Don't repeat any new pair often. Like, wear your new pair of clothes after a week or 15 days between your regular clothes. This way, it appears that you own new clothing all the time for those who see you daily. Sssh! A secret to keep.
Some people have that habit of wearing a new pair often the moment they purchase it, which makes the new pair look regular as it gets washed too many times and at the end, they don’t have any pair that looks new.
ii) If you get invited to a party related to a festival you don't celebrate, try to dress up like its theme. Your host will be happy to see you like that and feel respected as you cared for their feelings.
iii) If you stay at home or work from home, you should dress up like you are ready to step out. The crisp dressing makes you feel confident, active and keeps your energy level up throughout the day.
iv) And lastly, if you have kids, you can make them wear all kinds of clothes that look good on them. Wearing a different variety of clothes will help them to feel comfortable in different patterns and textures. And in future, they will be flexible to wear a wider choice of collection and won't stick to a particular texture or type.
Junk of anything will overwhelm one's mind and block the positive energy in the home. It's essential to get rid of things you don't like and fill your home with things you love, which can help change your home's whole aura. Listen to what your mind says in an instant when you audit, the first answer is mostly the right one and avoid giving excuses. Try it once; I am sure you will be proud of yourself!
